Celtics star Derrick White makes unique NBA history in win over Jazz

Boston Celtics guard Derrick White had one of the best games of his career in Tuesday night's win over the Utah Jazz, and he made NBA history in the process.

White had 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists in Boston's 129-119 road win over the Jazz. He also had a career-high seven blocked shots -- that's right, seven.

White's previous high for blocked shots in a game this season was four, which he accomplished on Dec. 19. His seven blocks on Tuesday were the most ever by a Celtics guard in a single game. White also tied an NBA record.

There are now five guards in NBA history who have blocked seven shots in a game. White joins a list that already included Tracy McGrady, Dennis Johnson, Doug Christie and George Gervin. Of White's seven blocks, four came on shot attempts from 7-foot-1 sharpshooter Lauri Markkanen.

Derrick White surprised himself

White was informed in an on-court interview after the game that he had tied the NBA record for most blocked shots in a game by a guard. Even he seemed surprised by the feat.

"I don't know. I'm just trying to help us win any way I can," White said. "That's kind of a crazy one and...that's kind of crazy, yeah. I don't know what to say."

White is averaging a career-high 18.4 points through 31 games this season. The Celtics have needed him to step up with Jayson Tatum recovering from a torn Achilles, and White certainly did that against the Jazz. Very few people -- himself included -- expected that to come in the form of tying a blocked shot record.
