The Minnesota Vikings have the privilege of having the most overqualified defensive coordinator in all of football.
Brian Flores is overdue for another opportunity to be a head coach. But given his legal feud with the league and how things ended for him in Miami, he's been forced to settle for lesser positions over the past couple of years.
However, after watching his exotic blitz packages and how he's turned the Vikings' defense around, it might finally be time for him to get his own team again. And even if a head coach position isn't right around the corner, teams looking to make an upgrade at defensive coordinator could come calling.
When asked about potentially leaving the Twin Cities, the renowned defensive coordinator acknowledged that, as much as he's loved his time in Minnesota, anything is possible in the offseason.
“Obviously, there’s been a lot of talk about my personal situation and next year,” Flores said, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “Look, I I’ve said this many times. I’ve loved my time here in Minnesota. My family loves it. The state of Minnesota’s been tremendous to me. [Coach Kevin O’Connell] mentioned there’s been great dialogue, and there has. And now we’ll just kind of let the club and my representation handle the rest. And so that’s kind of where I’m at on that.”
Flores didn't want to make any promises, and it sounded like he's well aware of the fact that he might not be coming back next season.
“I mean, if everything lines up and it fits, you know, from a football standpoint, it fits. And I think there’s always — it’s called a business part of this. The football all lines up, and we’ll just see where it all goes,” he added.
Despite missing the playoffs, the Vikings ranked fifth in total yards allowed per game (310.6), third in passing yards (168.8) and fifth in third-down conversion percentage allowed (35.1).
