Matthew Stafford opens up about possibly losing MVP to Drake Maye

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford may have cost himself the MVP Award when he shockingly threw three interceptions in his club's upset 27-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17.

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Stafford declined to send a final message to MVP voters who may be undecided.

Matthew Stafford "not too worried" about possibly losing MVP

"I'm not too worried about it," Stafford said, per Sarah Barshop of ESPN. "People are going to vote how they want to vote. They're going to say what they want to say. I'm just trying to put as good of a season together as I possibly can. And our last opportunity to do that is coming up this weekend, so I'm excited about that chance."

Stafford entered Monday night as the betting favorite to claim the MVP Award, but things shifted even before the Rams fell to 11-5 on the season. As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Drake Maye of the New England Patriots as the betting favorite at -295 odds to be named MVP. Stafford was second on the list at +225 odds.

"Would love to play perfect in every game, not a robot. And it happens," Stafford continued. "Just proud of our team and just looking forward to another opportunity, like I said."

Is Matthew Stafford about to finish the best regular season of his career?

Pro Football Reference stats show that Stafford leads the NFL among qualified quarterbacks with an average of 8.26 adjusted net yards per pass attempt and 42 passing touchdowns. He's second with a 108.8 passer rating and fifth with a 70.1 adjusted QBR.

A Wednesday story shared that "no one in his inner circle believes Stafford will retire after this season." Later in the day, the 37-year-old was asked whether he believes he's about to finish the best regular season of his impressive career.

"Yeah, I think so," Stafford responded. "Probably. It's up there. I think statistically, probably. I don't know, I haven't looked at all the other ones, but it's up there with some of the better ones I've played. But the cool thing about that is just because I've got such a great group around me."

The Rams can't end Week 18 any better than as the NFC's No. 5 seed for the playoffs. They host the Arizona Cardinals (3-13) this coming Sunday.
