Report: Hawks express interest in Mavericks’ Daniel Gafford

The Hawks are exploring options up front, and one name that has surfaced is Daniel Gafford.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, Atlanta has expressed interest in the Mavericks big man as Kristaps Porzingis continues to battle an illness that has kept him out for extended stretches.

Porzingis has missed 14 of the Hawks’ past 15 games, leaving Atlanta thin in the frontcourt.

Gafford would address an immediate need, though any deal would be complicated. He signed a three-year, $60 million extension last offseason and is under contract through 2029, a financial commitment comparable to centers such as Wendell Carter Jr. and Jarrett Allen.

Hawks sources strongly disputed reports that the team would include 2024 No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher in a potential trade. Team officials remain encouraged by Risacher’s long-term development despite an uneven second season.

From Dallas’ perspective, the Mavericks are seeking young players and expiring contracts as they continue reshaping the roster, and Gafford appears available at the right price.

Still, his own injury history adds risk for Atlanta, particularly given Porzingis’ situation.

The Hawks have dropped seven straight games and 10 of their last 12. With the deadline approaching, patience may be tested as losses continue to mount.
