Red Sox reportedly make 'aggressive' offer to top free-agent target

The Boston Red Sox have not been shy about their desire to keep third baseman Alex Bregman. That may be coming closer to reality.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney on the "First Up with Korolnek and Colaiacovo" podcast, the Red Sox have made an "aggressive" offer to Bregman. Olney further speculated that Bregman will return to Boston.

Bregman had languished in free agency before signing a three-year, $120 million contract with an opt-out clause after each year. He had a strong first season in Boston, posting a .273/.360/.462 batting line in his 495 plate appearances, hitting 18 homers and 28 doubles. Bregman was a distinct upgrade defensively over Rafael Devers at third, helping a pitching staff that ranked fifth in the majors with a 3.72 ERA.

Boston Red Sox remain best fit for Alex Bregman

Bregman has, once again, found himself languishing in free agency as the year changed. He has been linked to several teams besides the Red Sox, with the Cubs and Tigers among potential suitors. The Blue Jays had been linked to Bregman as well, although that interest may have ended with their signing of corner infielder Kazuma Okamoto. The Diamondbacks were also listed as a potential suitor, with their interest seemingly dependent on whether or not second baseman Ketel Marte is traded.

The Red Sox, however, have looked at other potential options for the hot corner. They have been linked to third baseman Eugenio Suarez and shortstop Bo Bichette in free agency. The Red Sox have also been linked to utility man Brendan Donovan, who has saved nine runs in just 46 games at third in his career.

However, Bregman may be the best fit for the Red Sox. His right-handed bat would help balance a lineup that is skewed to the left side. Bregman's defense would still make a difference even with a revamped rotation. Although he has remained in free agency longer than anticipated, a return to Boston may be the best result for both sides.
