'All options are on the table': Cardinals GM discusses Kyler Murray's future after firing of Jonathan Gannon

The Arizona Cardinals are already looking for a new head coach. They could soon be looking for a new quarterback as well.

On Monday, the Cardinals fired HC Jonathan Gannon after he went 15-36 in three seasons in Arizona. That signals they're entering a full-blown rebuild, making QB Kyler Murray's future with the team more uncertain.

Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort discusses Kyler Murray's future

After firing Gannon, Ossenfort fielded questions about Murray, who missed the team's final 12 games after suffering a foot injury in Week 5. Arizona, however, may have been using the injury as an excuse to keep the QB on the bench to preserve his trade value.

Ossenfort didn't say the Cardinals would trade Murray, but he didn't confirm he would be the team's QB1 in 2026.

"We just came off the last game of the year, and less than 24 hours ago, we just left the field," the GM said, per Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com. "There'll be a time and place for those discussions. I'd say all options are on the table, whether it's quarterback or any other position. We're gonna investigate all those to improve the team."

That sure sounds like GM speak. Translation: The Cardinals haven't reached a decision, but bank on them moving on from Murray this offseason.

Since the 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year signed a five-year, $230.5M extension in 2022, he has struggled to live up to that deal. The QB has a 16-25 record over his past 41 starts and has made no Pro Bowls.

Trading Murray with a post-June 1 designation would be better than releasing him for the Cardinals. Over the Cap estimates that a trade would save Arizona $42.54M but would also incur $10.72M. Releasing him with a post-June 1 designation would incur $47.5M and $5.74M.

A weak QB class in the 2026 NFL Draft increases Murray's trade value. The only QBs Tankathon lists as top-50 prospects are Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, Oregon's Dante Moore and Alabama's Ty Simpson. Moore and Simpson may return to school for the 2026 season.

If the Cardinals (3-14) don't take a QB with pick No. 3 in the 2026 draft, they could roll with Jacoby Brissett as a bridge QB next season. They could subsequently select a QB in the 2027 draft, perhaps Ohio State's Julian Sayin or Texas' Arch Manning, setting them up for life after Murray.
