Assuming sportsbooks and NFL insiders are correct, either New England Patriots second-year quarterback Drake Maye or Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams will be named the Most Valuable Player for the 2025 regular season.
When asked about the subject during an on-air segment, living legend and league analyst Tom Brady revealed his pick for the MVP Award on Sunday.
"I think what Matthew Stafford’s done this season has been absolutely remarkable," Brady said, per Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire. "Forty-six touchdowns, for any quarterback, that’s a dream season. He’s been spectacular. Drake Maye, on the other side, has done some incredible things with (offensive coordinator) Josh McDaniels in their first year together. Drake’s got a long career ahead. I’m sure he’s going to have many opportunities. I would say Matthew Stafford."
Maye emerged as the betting favorite to claim the award after Stafford threw three interceptions in the Rams' upset 27-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17. However, DraftKings Sportsbook had Stafford back as the betting favorite at -180 odds to win MVP as of Monday morning. Maye was second on the list at +150 odds.
ESPN stats show that Stafford ended Week 18 leading the NFL with 4,707 passing yards and 46 passing touchdowns. He's fourth among qualified players with a 71.0 adjusted QBR and second with a 109.2 passer rating.
To compare, Maye is responsible for a league-best 77.2 adjusted QBR. He is also first among qualified quarterbacks with a 113.5 passer rating and a 72 percent completion percentage. Maye is third with 31 passing scores and fourth with 4,394 yards through the air.
"I'm trying to play the game the way I know how to play it," Stafford said after the Rams improved to 12-5 via a 37-20 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, per ESPN's Sarah Barshop. "Felt like I had a nice season. And really just proud of our team. This is an award that is earned by everybody. ...And I got bigger fish to fry at the moment, so that's what I'm [going to] be worried about."
The Rams next play a wild-card playoff game at the Carolina Panthers (8-9) on Jan. 10. On Jan. 11, the 14-3 Patriots will host the 11-6 Los Angeles Chargers for a wild-card showdown.
