Cardinals QB Kyler Murray has strong reaction to Jonathan Gannon's firing

On Monday, the Arizona Cardinals fired head coach Jonathan Gannon after a 3-14 finish in the regular season.

The firing was somewhat of a surprise, as many NFL insiders thought owner Michael Bidwill would give Gannon another chance after an injury-riddled season crushed the Cardinals this season.

Arizona was trending upward with a 2-0 start to the regular season after finishing 8-9 in 2024. However, Gannon would end his tenure with a 15-36 record in three seasons with the Cardinals.

On X, Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray reacted to the firing, praising him for being a leader to the team.

"My guy, genuinely loved going to war with you," Murray wrote. "Appreciate who you are as a man and a coach. Warpath-"

Murray played in just five games this season before being ruled out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury. He threw for 962 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. He added another 173 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

With Arizona moving on from Gannon, it appears more likely that the Cardinals could move Murray in the offseason.

The Arizona Cardinals could move on from Kyler Murray

During his news conference on Monday, Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort left open the possibility that Murray could be traded in the offseason.

"As it pertains to Kyler; Kyler is under contract," Ossenfort said. "We just came off the last game of the year, and less than 24 hours ago we just left the field. There will be a time and place for those discussions.

"I think when you come off a season like we have, I'd say all options are on the table, whether it's quarterback or any other position. All options are on the table, and we're going to investigate all those to improve the team."

The 2019 No. 1 pick did not have his best seasons under Gannon. Murray has not made the Pro Bowl since he made his second consecutive appearance in 2021. 2021 was also the only season the Cardinals made the postseason with Murray.

Arizona should look to make a fresh start with a new head coach and quarterback. With the No. 3 pick in the draft, the Cardinals will likely not be in position to take quarterbacks Fernando Mendoza from Indiana or Dante Moore from Oregon.

However, Arizona could take Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at No. 3. By trading Murray, the Cardinals could help build around a future franchise quarterback.

The Cardinals thought they had a franchise quarterback in Murray when they signed him to a five-year, $230.5 million extension in 2022. But the results from Gannon era have not been impressive.

Both sides could be better off with a trade.
