Four NHL Draft prospects who raised their stock at 2026 World Juniors

The 2026 World Juniors have come to a close, with Sweden taking the gold for the first time since 2012. Comprised of an elite group of under-20-year-old hockey prospects, the tournament gives potential 2026 draft picks a chance to showcase their skills on the big stage.

Which prospects raised their stock at the 2026 World Junior tournament? Let's take a look at four players.

Ivar Stenberg, right wing, Sweden

The gold medalist came into the tournament as a top-five prospect for the 2026 Draft and after 10 points in seven games, including a goal and two assists in the gold-medal game, he becomes a name to watch for the first overall selection.

Stemberg also added a goal and an assist in Sweden's semifinal shootout win against Finland. With a clutch performance in both the gold medal and semifinal game, don't be surprised to hear Stenberg's name called first in June.

Alberts Smits, defense, Latvia

Playing for a team that has just two NHL drafted players can be tough, but the young defender showcased his elite talent for an underdog Latvian team. In a 6-3 quarterfinal loss to the Swedes, Smits played a team leading 21:41 while also contributing an assist.

At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, the left-shot defenseman finished the tournament with five points in five games. For any team in the top five looking to shape their blue line, Smits has placed himself in contention for top defender of the draft.

Chase Reid, defense, United States

Although the two-time defending champions had a disappointing tournament, finishing fifth, draft-eligible defender Chase Reid was outstanding for the red, white and blue.

Showcasing his ability to produce on the back end and quarterback a power play, Reid's smooth skating ability helped him score four points in five games.

Although there's plenty of competition for top defenseman of the draft, Reid made his case to be the first one selected.

Tomas Chrenko, center, Slovakia

Slovakian junior hockey has been on the rise as of late, with top draft selections like first-overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky (2022), third-overall Simon Nemec (2022) and 10th overall Dalibor Dvorsky (2023). Now, Chrenko makes his case to be drafted in the first round.

The Slovaks did get bounced 7-1 in the quarterfinal by the Canadians, but Chrenko had an excellent tournament, finishing with five goals and eight points in five games, including a hat trick versus Germany.

Although he may not get selected in the top 10, Chrenko should have solidified his first round status after this tournament.
