Philip Rivers opens up about head-coaching rumors after dramatic return to Colts

A recent report suggested that 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers could receive interest from NFL teams seeking new head coaches this offseason.

Rivers spent some of his retirement working as a head coach at the high school level before he returned to the Indianapolis Colts in December. While he confirmed on Monday that he plans to resume coaching at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, he also didn't slam the door shut on speaking with NFL clubs this winter.

Is Philip Rivers open to working as a head coach in the NFL?

"There's nothing concrete to that," Rivers said about possibly interviewing for NFL head-coaching jobs, per Stephen Holder of ESPN. "I think if this past month has taught me is you're open, obviously, to anything, I guess. Then you go from there. But I'm looking forward to going back home and getting back with those [players], getting back to my family and [Rivers' son] Gunner's senior season coming up."

The New York Giants (Jaxson Dart) and Tennessee Titans (Cam Ward) are two teams that are searching for new head coaches and that feature young quarterbacks who presumably would benefit from working with Rivers. Meanwhile, a Las Vegas Raiders side that is expected to make Dante Moore Fernando Mendoza the first pick of this year's draft parted ways with head coach Pete Carroll on Monday.

It's unclear if any of those clubs would have a serious interest in interviewing Rivers.

Does Philip Rivers think he could immediately succeed as an NFL head coach?

"I do think, as humbly as I can say it, that I could coach at this level," Rivers added. "I know enough about the game and about the guys, and from a leadership standpoint, camaraderie, all that comes with it. But, again, that's not something that I'm sitting here pursuing. If anything I learned the last four weeks, it's take it one day at a time. Because there was a Sunday afternoon, I had no thought of being in Indianapolis the next day. Then, 24 hours later, I was here."

Rivers may not be "pursuing" an NFL job, but it also sounds like he would be open to chat if a team called regarding his services over the next few weeks.
