Ja Morant's historic first half carries Grizzlies to comfortable win over Magic

After suffering a 118-111 loss to the Orlando Magic in Berlin, Germany, on Thursday, the Memphis Grizzlies responded with a 126-109 win in London on Sunday.

Two-time All-Star guard Ja Morant was a major reason why, scoring 24 points (7-of-13 FG), five rebounds and 13 assists in his first game back since Jan. 2 after dealing with a right calf injury. In the first half alone, he had 20 points and 10 assists as the Grizzlies (18-23) took a 72-53 lead into the break.

Orlando (23-19) trailed by as many as 33 and shot 44 percent from the floor. Amid all the trade rumors and a suspension earlier this season for what was described as "conduct detrimental to the team," Morant put together a vintage performance and reminded everyone how important he is to this team's success.

Ja Morant has a first-half performance for the ages

With his 20 points and 10 assists in the opening half, Morant became the first player in franchise history with that stat line in a half in the play-by-play era (since 1997-98).

In addition, Morant joins Fred Van Vleet, Jrue Holiday and Tyrese Haliburton as the only four players since 1996-97 with at least 20 points, 10 assists, three three-pointers and zero turnovers in a single half, per SB Nation's Shawn Coleman.

This is the fourth consecutive game the Grizzlies have led by at least 16 points, even though they are just 2-2 in those four contests. However, it is a huge step in the right direction for a Grizzlies team that had lost seven of its last nine coming into Sunday.

It wasn't just Morant, either, as four of Memphis' five starters scored in double figures. Forward Jaren Jackson Jr. added 17 points (7-of-15 FG) and center Jock Landale tacked on 21 points (9-of-11 FG) and eight rebounds off the bench.

As of the Grizzlies' win on Sunday, they still have some work to do as the 10th seed in the Western Conference. With that said, if this is the version of Morant they are going to get on a nightly basis, there is no reason they cannot find themselves back in the thick of the playoff race and start stringing some wins together.
