Bills release tribute video to fired head coach Sean McDermott

Things didn't end the way either the Buffalo Bills or now-former head coach Sean McDermott wanted them to.

The end goal was a Super Bowl. That's always the goal in the NFL, of course, but in Buffalo, there's just something about getting the chance to raise that trophy that means so much.

There's also something about missing out on a championship that stings more in Buffalo, though, perhaps more than just about any other city in the league.

The Bills have never won a Super Bowl, but they've made four appearances. Their last appearance was all the way back in 1993, though, and before McDermott was hired in 2017, they were suffering from a playoff drought that dated back to 1999.

So yes, it meant a lot that McDermott made the playoffs in his first season as head coach in Buffalo. It also meant a lot that he took them back to the playoffs in seven of the next eight seasons.

However, McDermott could never get the Bills over the hump, which is why he was fired after a 33-30 divisional-round loss to the Denver Broncos this past weekend.

Perhaps that's also why the Bills released a tribute video to their former head coach.

Sean McDermott meant a lot to the Buffalo Bills

You don't often see a franchise fire a head coach and then release a tribute video just days later. In fact, it really never happens.

That goes to show you how much McDermott meant in Buffalo, though, despite his shortcomings in the playoffs.

In nine seasons, McDermott notched a 98-50 record. He took the Bills to the AFC Championship Game twice, and he helped turn quarterback Josh Allen into the 2024 NFL MVP.

For a franchise known for always being the bridesmaid and never being the bride, though, everything McDermott accomplished in Buffalo was ultimately not enough.
