Reigning MVP Josh Allen named finalist for 2025 MVP award

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will be considered for at least one NFL award this year.

The Associated Press’ Rob Maaddi reported on Thursday that Allen was named one of five finalists for the 2025 AP NFL MVP award.

Allen, 29, took home his first AP NFL MVP award last season.

The Wyoming product followed up his first year as the league’s reigning MVP throwing for 3,668 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Though Allen saw a year-over-year regression in those three areas, the eight-year veteran did post a career-high 69.3 percent completion percentage.

The Bills earned a 12-5 record for the year. Buffalo advanced to the Divisional Round of the 2025 NFL playoffs, where they lost to the Denver Broncos 33-30.

For his exemplary play during the regular season, Allen was named next to fellow finalists Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars), Drake Maye (New England Patriots), Matthew Stafford (Los Angeles Rams) as well as Christian McCaffrey (San Francisco 49ers).

A win for Allen would make him the 12th player in NFL history to win the MVP award multiple times.

Maye (14-3) and Lawrence (13-4) finished with better records for their respective teams than the former No. 7 overall pick from 2018.

Allen also trailed those two counterparts, as well as Stafford, in passing yards by at least a 338-yard margin, as well as passing touchdowns by at least a four-touchdown margin. hIS 579 rushing yards separated him from all other quarterbacks in the ground game, however.

That, coupled with his 14 rushing touchdowns, which trailed only Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor’s 18 and Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry’s 16, add to his case to win MVP again.

While Allen produced another excellent season, his odds of claiming a second consecutive MVP are long. Stafford is the heavy favorite (-750, per FanDuel) while Maye checks in at No. 2 (+600). Allen, along with Lawrence and McCaffrey, sit in a distant third (+30000).
