No. 22 North Carolina earned a huge ACC road victory on Saturday, and it did so in style.
The Tarheels trailed No. 14 Virginia, 43-27, late in the first half, but a 7-0 sprint to end the first frame kept UNC in the game. In the second half, Hubert Davis' squad turned in a much-needed gritty performance to stun the Charlottesville crowd and seal an 85-80 win.
UNC took its first lead since it was 2-0 with 11:47 to go in the first half. But the Cavaliers didn't fold, striking back and even leading 74-72 inside of four minutes to play.
But that was when everything came apart for UVA, as UNC went on a 9-0 run to take an 81-74 lead that it maintained with free throws down the stretch.
Virginia gave up a crucial offensive rebound with 20 seconds to play that iced the game. The loss is just the second in ACC play for the Cavaliers (16-3, 5-2 ACC), while the win pushes UNC (16-4, 4-3 ACC) over .500 in conference play.
It was star freshman forward Caleb Wilson who was the hero for the Tar Heels on Saturday.
Wilson scored 20 points on an efficient 8-for-12 mark from the field. He also snagged the game-clinching offensive rebound with 20 seconds left that led to a UNC free throw.
Wilson is averaging 19.8 points per game this season and has scored at least 17 in each of UNC's last five contests.
