The Kansas City Chiefs are going in a new direction at offensive coordinator.
Matt Nagy has been the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs for the past three seasons. He helped them make two Super Bowls and win one.
Nagy's contract ended this past season, though, and he's since been on the open market. On Monday, the Chiefs brought back Eric Bieniemy to run their offense, but head coach Andy Reid took the opportunity to hype up Nagy while announcing Bieniemy's hiring in a news conference.
Basically, he let Nagy walk so that he could find a new opportunity, and Reid believes it should be an opportunity as a head coach.
"Matt and I have a great relationship," Reid said, according to Nate Taylor of ESPN. "Before the season even started here, I knew that he wanted an opportunity to have his own show. He's been a head coach. He was Coach of the Year [in 2018 with Chicago Bears]. All the things I've said about him I still feel [that way] about him.
"He deserves to have a head coaching job. If not, it gives him an opportunity to go out and do his thing. I mean, somebody is missing a gem here. That's how I feel. I would love to see him get picked up and going. At the same time, we got back a gem [in Bieniemy]. It has a chance to be a win-win here when everything is said and done."
Nagy was the head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018-21. He got that job because of the work he did as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the Chiefs, his first time around, from 2013-17.
Nagy went 34-31 and made the playoffs in two out of his four seasons in Chicago, but he went 0-2 in the playoffs and was fired after going 6-11 in 2021.
He picked up back in Kansas City, and now he's looking for a second chance. He's interviewed with the Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders to fill their head coaching positions and was a finalist in Tennessee before the Titans hired Robert Saleh.
Ultimately, Nagy feels like he has the experience that matters. He's also learned from his experiences in Chicago.
"I feel really good about where I'm at. I've prepared for several years, since I went through it, [for] the right time. Everything I went through in Chicago, it all happened for a reason," Nagy recently said, according to Taylor and ESPN. "To be able to come back here in Kansas City and be here with Coach Reid and all these players, is special. It's that time of the year, so be ready for it."
