To the surprise of everybody but those who didn't vote for him, Bill Belichick is not a Hall of Famer. At least, not a first-ballot one.
The legendary head coach didn't get the necessary 40 of 50 votes to get in on his first year of eligibility.
Needless to say, that decision sparked uproar on social media. From fans to analysts and current and former players, to even personalities like LeBron James, everyone had something to say about this.
That's why, even a tight-lipped figure like Belichick himself couldn't believe it. According to a report by ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham, the UNC head coach said what most fans also echoed on social media.
"'Six Super Bowls isn't enough?' Belichick asked an associate, referring to the championships he won as head coach of the New England Patriots. He won two more as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. To another associate, he said, 'What does a guy have to do?'"
Some may argue that Belichick reaped what he sowed. He was involved in two infamous cheating scandals, and he was far from nice to the media.
That being said, there's simply no way to deny that he's probably the most deserving first-ballot Hall of Famer we've seen in decades, perhaps ever.
Granted, other sports punish cheaters, and Belichick did cheat. But if that logic applies to him, will it also happen to Tom Brady?
The Pro Football Hall of Fame's credibility took a huge shot on Jan. 27. And even if Belichick gets in eventually -- which he will -- this will go down as one of the most infamous moments in the institution's history.
