Multiple Cleveland Browns insiders were downright stunned to learn on Wednesday that the club had hired Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken over Cleveland defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to be the Browns' next head coach.
It sounds like there's a legitimate chance that Schwartz and others associated with the Browns won't stick around for the Monken era.
"Schwartz's involvement is now unlikely, as the well-regarded coordinator was visibly upset at being passed over for the top job and told coaches he does not plan to stay with the Browns despite being under contract and wanted in Cleveland," NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported on Wednesday afternoon. The story added that Schwartz said "his goodbyes" to people within the Browns' facility after he learned about the Monken decision.
Meanwhile, Browns reporter Ashley Bastock of the Cleveland Plain Dealer noted that star pass-rusher Myles Garrett and cornerback Denzel Ward are among key Cleveland players who loved playing for Schwartz.
"I don’t know that people understand how bad it could get for [the] Browns if Schwartz leaves, and on bad terms," Bastock wrote. "...The impact of the ripple effect could be incomprehensible."
Garrett went public with a trade request last February, but he ultimately agreed to a four-year, $160M contract extension that included $123.5M guaranteed and a no-trade clause to stay with the club. The 30-year-old then set a new official single-season record of 23 sacks while playing for a team that went 5-12.
A December story mentioned that Garrett's contract "is tradable" if he makes things uncomfortable for the Browns ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.
"Myles has a no-trade clause now and could control where he goes if he were to say, request a trade," Bastock added. "He has the power now. Also, not many coordinators run this system."
Roughly 11 months ago, it was thought that the Browns would want multiple first-round draft picks and other assets in return for Garrett's services. For now, Cleveland fans and NFL contenders will have to wait to see how Garrett responds if Schwartz leaves the Browns this winter.
Back in 2015, the #Browns let then-OC Kyle Shanahan out of his contract to take the same role with the Falcons. He wrote up a 32-point presentation (with Mike McDaniels’ help!) and convinced then-HC Mike Pettine and ownership to let him go. https://t.co/iA4is8xmK9
