Five potential DC targets for new Bills HC Joe Brady

Joe Brady is now the youngest active head coach in the NFL. Most coaches in his position would consider hiring an experienced defensive coordinator. Who are the ideal candidates for the new Bills HC?

Jim Leonhard ( Broncos assistant HC and defensive pass game coordinator)

He's expected to be a leading candidate for the job, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Leonhard knows the organization, the city and the fan base intimately. His work in Denver, elevating its secondary despite roster challenges, highlights his expertise in zone coverages. It would be a good transition in philosophy.

Jim Schwartz ( Browns defensive coordinator)

With the hiring of Todd Monken as Browns HC, Schwartz seems to be on the open market. Schwartz reportedly told the organization that he's done in Cleveland despite being under contract. He would bring an aggressive, blitz-heavy 4-3 scheme to Buffalo.

Ryan Nielsen (Bills senior defensive assistant)

Could Nielsen also earn an in-house promotion? He does have the experience and direct ties to Brady during their time in New Orleans from 2017-18. Nielsen has multiple years of DC experience (both college and NFL) and aligns with modern, versatile defenses that blend man/zone concepts. He could introduce subtle schematic tweaks without a full overhaul, providing Brady a trusted colleague while shifting away from pure Sean McDermott principles.

Raheem Morris (Former  Falcons HC)

Morris has been a consistent topic for all the defensive coordinator openings across the NFL. He brings head-coaching experience and a track record of turning around units (including Atlanta's defense). His adaptability and player development skills could energize the Bills secondary. While not a direct Brady connection, his availability and reputation make him a realistic target.

Al Holcomb (Bills linebackers coach)

Holcomb is another internal, realistic promotion, given his rise in the NFL. His linebacker expertise could maintain core elements while evolving under new leadership. During his one-year tenure as the Cardinals defensive coordinator in 2018, the defense faced challenges but ranked second in third-down stops, and he would be expected to implement a 3-4 system.
