Three NFL teams that should pursue a top free agent based on projected salary-cap increase

The 2026 NFL offseason is poised for fireworks amid a projected salary-cap surge. The league has projected the 2026 cap at $301.2 million to $305.7 million per team, a hefty jump from 2025's $279.2 million.

This "cap explosion" injects nearly $100 million more league-wide spending power compared to 2022. Teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, Washington Commanders, Cincinnati Bengals and more are primed to pounce due to the increase. They will all see at least around $55 million in cap space.

Expect aggressive moves such as extensions for young key players, veteran signings and perhaps a few blockbuster trades to clear room. Which teams could pursue top free agents in March?

Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders need a little bit of everything, from their new coaching staff and potential quarterback in Fernando Mendoza. Offensive lineman Tyler Linderbaum will be highly sought after and would be a great addition for Las Vegas. He's a well-balanced offensive lineman with good foot speed in space, displaces in the run game and is one of the top pass protectors in the league.

Washington Commanders

Edge-rusher Trey Hendrickson tops many lists as the top free agent for teams looking for pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Despite injuries in 2025, the Cincinnati Bengal notched a 90.0 PFF pass-rush grade, marking his fifth straight elite season. He would be the ideal addition for HC Dan Quinn.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills are in need of consistent weapons who can open up the field for star QB Josh Allen. Wide receiver George Pickens follows closely, eyed for his explosive playmaking.

Overall big board buzz

There are plenty of running backs to pick from in free agency, including Breece Hall, Kenneth Walker III and Travis Etienne Jr. Other notables include quarterback Malik Willis, who is flashing starter potential. Linebackers Quay Walker and Devin Lloyd could command premium deals.

The 2026 NFL free-agency signing period and new league year officially begin on March 11. Legal tampering, allowing teams to negotiate with agents for unrestricted free agents, begins two days earlier on March 9. In an era of parity, this cap boom could crown new contenders or entrench dynasties. Buckle up; the bidding begins soon.
