Eagles could lose a key member of their coaching staff

The Philadelphia Eagles may not be finished with their offseason of upheaval.

Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice reported Sunday that the Eagles had to talk defensive coordinator Vic Fangio out of retirement when the season ended. The team was ready to consider former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon and Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz as his replacement if Fangio retired. Both have run the Eagles defense in previous stints.

The team managed to convince Fangio to stay on for one more year, but Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that Fangio’s return is still not completely certain, and he might change his mind again.

Fangio has been a massive part of the Eagles’ success on defense since joining the team in 2024. His unit helped win a Super Bowl in 2024 and held opponents to 19.1 points per game last season, largely keeping the Eagles’ season alive as their offense floundered.

Fangio, 67, is known to be an intense perfectionist, and he also considered retirement last year. The Eagles will try to get one more year out of him, but that does not appear to be a guarantee.
