The Utah Jazz, floundering at 15-35 in the Western Conference, were an unexpected buyer ahead of Thursday's 3 p.m. ET NBA trade deadline. But their addition of Memphis Grizzlies power forward Jaren Jackson Jr. is a shrewd move by CEO Danny Ainge, getting the tires spinning on the franchise's next contending era.
Per ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, Jackson, the 2022-23 Defensive Player of the Year, was part of an eight-player deal, going to Utah along with shooting guard John Konchar, center Jock Landale and point guard Vince Williams Jr. In exchange, the Jazz parted with rookie point guard Walter Clayton Jr., small forward Kyle Anderson, power forward Taylor Hendricks, power forward Georges Niang and three future first-round picks.
Fellow NBA insider Jake Fischer shared that the draft selections going to the Grizzlies are a 2027 Los Angeles Lakers pick, the most favorable 2027 pick between the Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves and a 2031 pick by way of the Phoenix Suns.
This season, Jackson has started 45 games and is averaging 19.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and one steal per game.

The Utah Jazz are trading their most favorable 2027 first-round pick (Cleveland/Minnesota/Utah), the Lakers' 2027 first-round pick, and Phoenix's 2031 first-round pick to Memphis, source says, to pry Jaren Jackson Jr. from the Grizzlies.

While a hefty price tag in terms of departing draft capital, the Jazz conveniently managed to hold on to their core players, including guard Keyonte George, forward Lauri Markkanen and injured center Walker Kessler, as well as wings Brice Sensabaugh and Ace Bailey and center Kyle Filipowski.
The Jazz make a major swing for Jackson and team him with Lauri Markkanen, Keyonte George, Walker Kessler and more. The move signals a full rebuild for the Grizzlies around its promising young core and now as many future first-round picks as any team in the NBA. https://t.co/rraRjT2Goz

Utah undoubtedly got the best player in the deal, and his future pairing alongside Markannen and Kessler, a 2026 restricted free agent, could be formidable in the West. According to The Athletic's Tony Jones, the Jazz plan for the trio to lead the front court for the long term.
League Sources: Utah’s move for JJJ will not affect the Jazz’ interest in keeping Walker Kessler long term. The Jazz are doing this envisioning JJJ/Lauri/Kessler frontcourt

Jackson, 26, signed an extension with the Grizzlies in July 2025, keeping him under contract through 2029-30. Markkanen, who is averaging a career-best 27.4 points per game this season, signed a five-year extension in August 2024.
Kessler, a 2022 first-round pick, underwent season-ending shoulder surgery after just five games this season but was excellent defensively in his first three seasons, averaging 2.4 blocks per game.
That's a fascinating foundation in the front court, while George's ascendence has things looking up in the backcourt. He's averaging 24.2 points per game in his third season, up from 16.8 a year ago.
After breaking up the Donovan Mitchell-Rudy Gobert duo, the Jazz are going on a fourth consecutive non-playoff season. Jackson would have made a more immediate difference elsewhere, but he could be just as key to ending Utah's postseason drought.
