Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders being added to the Pro Bowl Games roster as a replacement for New England Patriots starter Drake Maye sparked renewed conversations regarding whether or not the NFL's all-star festivities should exist.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, Sanders acknowledged he wasn't expecting to receive a Pro Bowl nod in January.
"Yes, I was surprised," Sanders said, per Nick Shook of the NFL's website. "It wasn't like I was just sitting there expecting it. ...I just didn't have too much thought in it. I'm not going to lie, a lot of the time I'm taking it day by day. ...If you would tell me that this was going to happen at the beginning of the year, I couldn't say that that would've happened."
Sanders made just seven starts during his debut pro campaign, and he guided Cleveland to three wins over those outings. Pro Football Reference stats show that he ranked last in the NFL among qualified players with a 56.6 percent completion percentage, 41st with a 68.1 passer rating and 40th with an 18.9 adjusted QBR.
The perception exists that Sanders' following on social media websites is the real reason he is taking part in Pro Bowl events. On Monday, Sanders insisted he is "thankful" to be part of the experience this week.
The Browns recently hired former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken as their new head coach. Monken spent the past three campaigns working with Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson, who earned the second MVP of his career in his first season playing under Monken.
"It's truly great that he was able to coach Lamar and he was able to accomplish everything he was able to accomplish in his life and his career," Sanders said about Monken. "I feel like we definitely have a connection just from talking to him, just seeing his vibe. He has a great vibe about him."
It's too early to know if Sanders will be Monken's QB1 this September. Perhaps Sanders will pick up some useful pointers from proven quarterbacks throughout the week leading up to the Super Bowl LX showdown involving the Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.
