The St. Louis Cardinals have spent the offseason unloading players to begin the rebuilding process. However, that does not mean they will not add major league talent to the roster.
Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reported that president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom indicated that he is looking to add to the Cardinals' outfield mix. He further reported that the addition could happen either through trade or free agency.
The desire to add an outfielder is not necessarily a new revelation. The Cardinals were reportedly among the teams interested in outfielder Austin Hays before he signed with the White Sox. Bloom had also previously mentioned that he wanted to add a right-handed hitting outfielder to balance the lineup.
The Cardinals' outfield group predominantly hits from the left side. Projected starters Lars Nootbaar and Victor Scott II are lefties, as is Nathan Church. Alec Burleson, despite being listed as the Cardinals current first baseman, has seen action in both outfield corners. Jordan Walker is a right-handed hitter, but has been unable to replicate his solid performance from his rookie season in 2023.
While the Cardinals signed outfielder Nelson Velasquez to a minor league contract, he does not have a track record of sustained success in the majors. Remaining free agents such as Randal Grichuk and Miguel Andujar could be an option on a one-year deal with an eye toward the trade deadline. Likewise, the Cardinals may be able to get a prospect from the Phillies to take on outfielder Nick Castellanos and a portion of the $20 million he is due this season.
As the Cardinals are not expected to contend for the postseason in 2026, a reclamation project such as Grichuk may be the best option. The Cardinals' options are limited, regardless of whether they look in free agency or the trade market. Bloom may want to act soon to land that outfielder; otherwise, the free-agent pool may dry up even more.
