The Atlanta Braves rotation has taken a hit before spring training officially started.
Mark Bowman from MLB.com reported that pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach has been placed on the 60-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation. The Braves are hopeful that he is dealing with bone spurs, but Schwellenbach is set to miss at least the first two months of the 2026 season.
Schwellenbach had an excellent start to the 2025 season before he missed the final three months due to a fractured right elbow. He posted a 3.09 ERA and a 0.967 WHIP over his 110.2 innings, striking out 108 batters with 18 walks.
Schwellenbach's latest stint on the IL personifies the biggest concern with the Braves rotation. Pitchers Chris Sale and Spencer Strider have proved that they can be top-of-the-rotation-caliber arms but have questions regarding their ability to remain healthy. Reynaldo Lopez had a stellar 2024 season after being converted back to the rotation but made just one appearance in 2025 before he was lost for the season.
Given the question marks surrounding the rotation, the Braves could use a dependable middle-of-the-rotation arm capable of taking the ball every fifth day. The Braves had reportedly been interested in pitchers Chris Bassitt and Lucas Giolito, two veteran starters who could help shore up the rotation.
As the Braves are expected to battle for a playoff berth, adding another starter such as Bassitt or Giolito has become more important. While neither pitcher is in the same tier as Schwellenbach, either option would help stabilize the rotation until he returns.
