Scottie Scheffler nails three eagles in near-comeback attempt at Pebble Beach

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler didn't win the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but he had the most impressive round of golf by far.

Heading into the final round of the four-round tournament on Sunday, Scheffler trailed then-leader Akshay Bhatia by eight shots. The 29-year-old closed that gap and nearly won Pebble Beach for the first time in his career.

Scottie Scheffler had a whale of a final round at Pebble Beach

Scheffler shot an outstanding 9-under-par 63 on Sunday. His best shot may have come on hole No. 18.

Scheffler's ball flew 186 yards through the wind onto the green. He then nailed a three-foot putt, which gave him his third eagle of the day. According to Ryan Young of Yahoo Sports, he became the first golfer in the last four decades to make that many eagles in a round at Pebble Beach.

Bogeys on holes No. 8, No. 12 and No. 15 ultimately cost Scheffler the win. Bhatia shot for a par 72, squandering his lead. Collin Morikawa took advantage of that. He shot a 5-under-par 67, winning Pebble Beach for the first time in his career.

Scheffler wasn't discouraged after the loss, though, and rightfully so.

"I had to do something special to give myself a chance," Scheffler said (via Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press). "The back nine, I felt like I had to get to 21 or 22 (under). I played a bit more aggressively than I normally do. It was a fun day overall. These are the weeks I'm proud of. I felt like I was battling myself to give myself a chance."

Morikawa, meanwhile, was elated after winning his first event since October 2023 at the Zozo Championship in Japan.

"Shoot, we're at Pebble Beach," Morikawa said (per Young). "So I'm going to enjoy this one."

Morikawa better enjoy the sights of Pebble Beach in Monterey County, California, while he can. Scheffler has won just one tournament this season, but if Sunday's round is a sign of things to come, that could soon change.

That should have Morikawa and others feeling a little antsy as they head into The Genesis Invitational, scheduled for Feb. 19-22 in Pacific Palisades, California.
