Sidney Crosby sets new Canadian Olympic record for NHL players

To add yet another feather in Sidney Crosby's proverbial cap, the Pittsburgh Penguins icon is now the owner of a major record set on the Olympic stage.

During Canada's 10-2 domination of France on Sunday, Crosby reached a level no NHL player has ever achieved while representing Canada in the Olympics.

With his first of three points in the game, Crosby passed Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla to become Canada's all-time leading scorer among NHL players at the Olympics.

Crosby, who scored a goal and helped out with two assists on Sunday, now has 16 career points in three Olympics, two more than the 14 Iginla put up between the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Olympic Games.

Sidney Crosby can still mark more Canadian Olympic history

Crosby will now look to pass Iginla in another important category: gold medals. Having won gold in both 2010, when he scored what's referred to as the "Golden Goal" — the overtime game-winner in the gold medal game over Team USA — and also in 2014, Crosby and his Team Canada teammate Drew Doughty would become the first men's hockey Canadians to ever capture three gold medals if they win the tournament this year.

All in all, the NHL's return to the Olympics has provided Crosby with an opportunity to further add to his overall hockey resume, one that's already among the most decorated in history.

Crosby's success at the Olympics also follows a first half of the NHL season that's seen him score 27 goals and lead the Penguins to a surprising 29-15-12 record and move ahead of Mario Lemieux as Pittsburgh's franchise leader in total points.

He has 59 points in 56 games so far this season, giving him a shot at exceeding 90 points in his fourth-straight season.

Currently in the midst of his 21st NHL season, Crosby owns 652 goals and 1,094 assists for 1,746 points. Accomplishment wise beyond just his statistics, Crosby is a 10-time NHL All-Star, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, two-time Conn Smythe Award winner as postseason MVP and two-time Hart Trophy winner as league MVP.

Simply put, Crosby has firmly established himself as hockey royalty.
