In their first game as the Associated Press No. 1 team in the country since 2013, the Michigan Wolverines showcased their national championship potential in a 91-80 road win against No. 7 Purdue on Tuesday.
Michigan (25-1, 15-1 Big Ten) wasted no time getting started, leading by as many as 20 in the opening half before taking a 48-32 lead into the break. From there, the Wolverines simply answered everything Purdue (21-5, 11-4 Big Ten) threw at them, further cementing their case as the nation's top-ranked team.
It was a balanced night in all phases for Michigan, which shot 30-of-57 (53%) from the floor, 13-of-23 (57%) from deep and assisted on 24 of its 30 made shots.
The Wolverines have been one of the best teams in the country all season, but it was not until previous No. 1 Arizona lost back-to-back games last week that they moved into the top spot.
Michigan's second-best scoring offense (90.6 PPG) has been key to its success all season, and that was no different against the Boilermakers. Junior guard Elliot Cadeau led the way with 17 points (6-of-12 FG), while senior forward Yaxel Lendeborg — the team's leading scorer this season — contributed 13 points (5-of-12 FG).
This three from freshman guard Trey McKenney, who had 13 points in 21 minutes off the bench, was especially clutch as Purdue had trimmed the deficit down to 11 at that point.
That's a pretty triple, Trey McKenney @umichbball

Six of Michigan's players scored in double-figures as the Wolverines added another double-digit win to their impressive resume. They now have 21 wins by at least 10 points, including five of their six games against ranked opponents.
Not only are the Wolverines No. 1 in the latest KenPom rankings, but they are also the top overall seed according to ESPN's Joe Lunardi's bracketology. The complete performance in a difficult road environment at Mackey Arena is the latest example why Michigan is a serious national title threat.
If the Big Ten is going to win its first national title since Michigan State in 2000, this Wolverines squad has everything it needs to end that drought. Another huge test awaits on Saturday against No. 3 Duke, but if Michigan proved anything on Tuesday, it is clearly deserving of the No. 1 ranking and will continue to pose a tall task to anyone who faces it.
