First-year Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson and second-year quarterback Caleb Williams understandably received plenty of praise for the Bears becoming one of the more positive surprises of the 2025 NFL season.
That said, veteran running back D'Andre Swift also proved to be a key figure for a Bears side that won the NFC North division title with a record of 11-6 and then advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs.
As Eric Edholm of the NFL's website noted, Swift's contract has no guaranteed money attached to it. Swift understands what that could mean, and he recently touched upon his uncertain future during a chat with Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times.
"I have no idea, but hopefully I did enough for them to want me back because I know I don’t want to go anywhere else," Swift told Lieser. "I hope it plays itself out that way. I love the city, I love the coaching staff and the men that I work with. That's out of my control, but if I had it my way, I'd be back. I don't want to play nowhere else."
ESPN stats show that Swift led the 2025 Bears with 223 carries, 1,087 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. That said, rookie and 2025 seventh-round draft choice Kyle Monangai contributed 169 carries, 783 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground.
While Monangai is in the early days of his inexpensive rookie contract, Swift's deal carries a salary-cap hit of roughly $8.8M for the 2026 campaign.
With Williams also on his rookie deal, the Bears may be willing to invest in other positions in an attempt to do more than pursue a playoff berth next season. Swift seems to believe he can build upon what he accomplished when he tallied 34 receptions for 299 yards and a touchdown across 16 regular-season games in Johnson's first campaign with the Bears.
"I can do more," Swift added. "I wish I would’ve been able to contribute a little more in the passing game. We’ve got so many pass-catchers on the field, so whenever it does come up, I try to make something happen with it, but I do know I could do more."
It remains to be seen if those running the Bears will want to see more of Swift playing for the club later this year.
