Five storylines for the Genesis Invitational: Rory McIlroy seeks first win at Riviera

The PGA Tour heads to The Riviera Country Club this week for the Genesis Invitational, the second consecutive Signature Event on the 2026 schedule. With an iconic golf course and a loaded field in store this week, let's break down the five juiciest storylines for Tiger Woods' PGA Tour event.

Welcome back, Riviera

We didn't get to see Riviera Country Club last year due to the wildfires in the area. Instead, the Genesis Invitational took place at Torrey Pines in San Diego, Calif., which didn't hit the same as the historic venue they call "Riv."

Riviera is a tough, classical layout that demands strong driving, precise iron play and creative short game. The drivable par-4 10th hole is one of the best short holes in the world, as the tiny, tilted green and surrounding horseshoe of bunkers demand impeccable strategy and execution. This is one of the greatest venues in professional golf, and we're glad it's back in our lives.

Can Scottie Scheffler snap his first-round slump?

Scheffler finished T3 at the WM Phoenix Open and T4 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, losing by a combined three strokes in those two tournaments. Amazingly, he would've won both if he hadn't played terribly (by his standards) in the first round.

Scheffler shot 2-over in the first round at TPC Scottsdale and nearly came all the way back to force a playoff on Sunday. He did the same at Pebble Beach after shooting even in the first round and going 20 under in his next 54 holes. If the World No. 1 can put four rounds together this week, he'll leave Riviera with the trophy.

Rory McIlroy seeking first career win at Riviera

For as prominent as Riviera is on the PGA Tour schedule, some of the most talented players of the 21st century have never won there. Woods, McIlroy and Scheffler are all winless at Riviera. In McIlroy's case, he's finished inside the top 10 just twice in eight career starts here. Could this be the year he checks Riviera off his list?

Collin Morikawa looks to keep his momentum rolling

Morikawa is coming off an emotional week in which he won for the first time since the 2023 Zozo Championship and announced that he's expecting his first child with his wife, Katherine Zhu. It won't be easy to return to the golf course a few days later and get the competitive juices flowing again.

Riviera is a venue with sticky course history, and Morikawa has finished T2, T6 and T19 in his last three starts here. If he can regain his focus coming off the win, there's no reason he can't contend again this week.

What's going on with Ludvig Aberg?

Aberg is off to a rough start in 2026. The Swede withdrew from the American Express, missed the cut and finished fourth to last at the Farmers Insurance Open and finished T37 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

This was supposed to be Aberg's year to leap into the elite tier of golfers on the PGA Tour, but he's only going backward to start the season. Can he turn it around before major championship season arrives?
