Cowboys pivot to another star after securing Javonte Williams deal

The Dallas Cowboys kicked off the offseason on a high note. Despite some speculation, they managed to lock in RB Javonte Williams for the foreseeable future.

Owner Jerry Jones agreed to give his running back $24 million over the next three years, including $16 million guaranteed. Now, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports that they're looking to do the same with star kicker Brandon Aubrey.

Cowboys want to get Brandon Aubrey paid

"We’ve been working on a long-term deal for some time," Cowboys co-owner Stephen Jones told Watkins. "We’ve exchanged offers and the goal is to get him signed. We’ll tender him before the deadline if that’s what we have to decide."

While not many kickers would demand this level of urgency in free agency, Aubrey is no ordinary kicker. He set a record with six field goals from 60+ yards and is the first kicker in NFL history to knock down three field goals of 55+ yards in a single game.

He's coming off his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection and converted 85.7 percent of his attempts last season. The Cowboys also need to figure out a way to keep George Pickens in town for the long run. The star wide receiver has set clear demands for his next contract, and he might not play ball if the Cowboys place him under the franchise tag and fail to get a deal done with him before the July 15 deadline.
