Yankees may not be done adding to roster

The New York Yankees may not be done adding to their roster.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees are still interested in adding a right-handed hitter, either at catcher or in the outfield. Outfielder Randal Grichuk, who was among the players Sherman mentioned the Yankees were interested in, is still available in free agency.

The Yankees have already added one platoon bat in first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. However, he does not afford the Yankees anything in regard to defensive versatility as he is strictly a first baseman. Infielder Amed Rosario offers that flexibility in the infield, but he has a total of 57 appearances in the outfield. Having a more experienced option in the outfield could prove beneficial.

New York Yankees' disappointing offseason may not be over

The Yankees theoretically have a pair of options already on the roster. Outfielder Jasson Dominguez and utility man Oswaldo Cabrera could help balance the Yankees lineup. There are problems with those players as an answer. Dominguez has seemingly fallen out of favor in New York and may be ticketed for Triple-A — if he is not used as trade bait. Cabrera underwent ankle surgery in the offseason and may not be ready for Opening Day.

Meanwhile, the Yankees' decision to essentially run back the same roster has led to the same flaws. Six of the Yankees' projected starters are left-handed hitters. Anthony Volpe, one of the Yankees few right-handed hitters, struggled in every facet of the game in 2025, and could lose playing time to Rosario or infielder Jose Caballero if he gets off to a slow start in 2026.

The New York Yankees lineup is facing the same problems it had in 2025. Adding another right-handed hitter, either in the outfield or behind the plate, may be a necessity.
