LeBron James addresses Luka Doncic’s decision after missing game-winner

The Los Angeles Lakers dropped a 110-109 heartbreaker to the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night, and the way it ended left plenty to talk about.

Orlando grabbed the lead with 6.7 seconds left when Wendell Carter Jr. cleaned up a missed shot with a tip-in. That forced the Lakers to burn their final timeout.

Coming out of the huddle, LeBron James had the inbound and found Luka Doncic open on the left wing behind the three-point line. Doncic sized up the defense but held off on pulling the trigger. That split-second decision changed the entire possession.

The moment Doncic started his dribble, Paolo Banchero and Anthony Black collapsed on him. He tried to reset and kicked it back out to James, but Jonathan Isaac was already closing in.

LeBron James shares perspective on Luka Doncic’s late-game choice

The play broke down from there, and James got stuck taking a contested fadeaway three that missed everything as time ran out. After the game, James said Doncic did not feel balanced enough to let it fly when he had the look.

"Obviously, you have to ask Luka what he saw on that," James said. "I thought he had a good look, and it looked like he kinda lost his balance. Didn't have the rhythm of the ball, whatever the case may be. That allowed him to get in front of him. I was kinda off balance when he gave it to me. I thought he had a great look. That's my POV."

The moment felt off, especially given Doncic's track record in crunch time. He has built a reputation on hitting big shots late in games, so passing up what looked like a decent opportunity raised some eyebrows.

That said, these moments tend to linger. Doncic is not the type to back down from another chance if it comes his way. The Lakers are 34-23 now and sitting in sixth place in the Western Conference.

Their schedule is not doing them any favors, either. They go to Phoenix on Thursday and the Bay Area on Saturday. Blowing a 12-point lead at home to an Orlando team missing key players makes getting back on track that much more urgent.
