The San Antonio Spurs have two consecutive Rookie of the Year winners and All-Star guard De'Aaron Fox. Wednesday night, it was Devin Vassell who got them their 10th straight win.
Vassell led the Spurs with 21 points and went 5-of-6 from three-point range as the Spurs held off a feisty Toronto Raptors team that held Victor Wembanyama to 3-of-12 shooting. The 25-year-old forward's recent hot streak is a big reason the Spurs have stayed hot themselves.
The Spurs have a good offense, but not a lot of outside shooting. That's where Vassell stands out. He's 16-of-25 from behind the arc in the Spurs' last four games and is making 37.8 percent of his three-point attempts on the season.
That's crucial for a team that relies on Vassell and Julian Champagnie for a lot of their three-point volume. The two combine to make 4.9 of the Spurs 13.1 threes per game, with Harrison Barnes adding 1.9 per game at 37.5 percent success. The difference is that Vassell is more than a catch-and-shoot player, with the threat of his outside shooting opening up opportunities for Wembanyama since Vassell can really pass.

San Antonio has a collection of strong and athletic guards who excel at driving to the hoop, but aren't as good at knocking down shots. Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper have been tremendous defenders, but when it comes to outside shooting, not so much.
Castle makes 29.5 percent of his three-point attempts. Harper makes only 25.4 percent. Fox is at 34.7 percent from deep.
They're all shooting over 47 percent from the field, but the lack of perimeter precision can hurt the team's spacing. The more Vassell and company can force the defense to defend the three-point line, the more space it opens up for the guards to drive and Wembanyama to do Wemby things near the basket.
The issue is Vassell's consistency. He was slow to getting his shooting on track after missing four weeks with an abductor injury, going 11-of-47 in his first nine games back. If he can keep it up, perhaps at an even higher volume of shots, then the Spurs could have an offense that's nearly as good as their championship-level defense.
