A recent report indicated that the Philadelphia Eagles may listen to offers for mercurial wide receiver A.J. Brown but won't trade him before June 1 due to reasons related to the salary cap.
On Friday morning, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer shared that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman could make a final decision about Brown's status before the first day of spring arrives.
"A decision on Brown will seemingly be made sooner — as in the next 10 days ahead of the official start of the 'legal tampering' period on March 9 — rather than later," McLane wrote. "At least that’s the sense sources close to several Eagles with uncertain futures have gotten from their conversations with the team this week."
Brown signed a three-year, $96M contract extension with $84M in guaranteed money in April 2024, so he only has so much say regarding where he will call home later this year unless he takes a drastic step and makes it clear he would rather forfeit money by sitting games out than ever play for the Eagles again. Additionally, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni insisted as recently as this week that he "loves" Brown as a person and a player.
That said, Sirianni also noted that he "can't guarantee" Brown will be with the Eagles when training camp practices get underway. Meanwhile, Roseman suggested he will listen to trade offers for just about any player ahead of the upcoming draft.
"Roseman’s tactics are renowned," McLane continued. "He’ll set the cost much higher than prevailing wisdom says it should be. One NFL executive said he heard the Eagles were seeking a return that included both a first- and second-round draft pick. Whether accurate or not, it’s a price tag already being floated within league circles."
McLane added that Roseman "won’t trade Brown, even if the receiver has told the Eagles he wants out of Philly" unless a team matches Roseman's asking price for the sometimes-difficult 28-year-old.
In short, interested teams hoping the Eagles could sell Brown at a discount may want to put such dreams to bed ahead of March.
