The No. 21 Miami (Ohio) RedHawks managed to stay unbeaten on Friday night with a 69-67, buzzer-beating win over Western Michigan. It improved the RedHawks to a perfect 29-0 on the season and has them just two wins away from completing a perfect regular season.
While the win is the most important thing, it still might be the type of game that will raise red flags as to how good this team actually is and what its upside is when it comes to postseason play.
Even though Miami (Ohio) is the only remaining unbeaten team in men's basketball, and even though it is just two wins away from completing an undefeated regular season (something only 20 teams have ever done), the RedHawks are still not getting much respect nationally.
They entered Friday's game ranked outside of the top 20, mainly due to the lack of high-end teams in the MAC Conference and because they have not played a single AP-ranked team all season.
Perhaps this has led to some tension and stress, as head coach Travis Steele was caught pushing over a speaker before halftime. The RedHawks went into halftime down 26-30.

Given that the MAC is typically a one-bid league in the NCAA Tournament every year, there is a very real chance that any slip-up in the MAC Conference tournament will ultimately keep them out of the field of 68. They not only need to keep winning, but they need to keep winning convincingly to keep building something of a resume. For the most part, they have been doing that all season and winning their games by double digits. Entering play on Friday, five of their previous wins had been by at least 10 points.
But Friday's game was concerning, not only because it came down to the wire, but because it came down to the wire against one of the worst teams in the MAC. Western Michigan entered the game just 4-11 in conference play and only 10-18 overall. That is the type of game you want to see a tournament team win without having to sweat it out.
Thanks to Trey Perry's buzzer-beater, they were able to get through.

In the end, that is ultimately all that matters for the RedHawks, but they are still in a position where winning out and running the table in the MAC Conference tournament is the only thing that might get them into the Big Dance.
It is a crazy thing to say about a team that is 29-0, but that is the reality that comes with modern college spots, playing in a mid-major conference and not playing a strong nonconference schedule. They have done nothing but win all season. They probably need to keep doing it to have a spot in the tournament.
