Jeremiyah Love, other RBs post outrageous 40-times at NFL combine

Whether it translates into NFL success is a matter of debate, but there is probably no event at the NFL Scouting Combine that can impact a prospect's draft stock as much as their 40-yard dash time. This is especially true for skill position players, including running backs.

That is probably good news for the running back class for the 2026 NFL Draft.

Three running backs ran sub-4.40 40s on Saturday, making this class what the NFL is calling the fastest group ever at the NFL combine.

Jeremiyah Love helps already strong draft stock with great 40-time

One of the big standouts from Saturday was Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love, as he posted the second-fastest time among the running back group at 4.36.

That came in just behind Mike Washington Jr (Arkansas), who paced all of the running backs at 4.33 in his run.

Love's Notre Dame teammate, Jadarian Price, also had a fantastic time at 4.49, tied for the sixth-fastest.

While all of these running backs helped themselves, Love might have done the most for himself with his time. He was already entering the draft process as the top running back in the class, given the way he dominated on the field the past couple of years in South Bend. Week in and week out, he was one of the most consistently outstanding players in college football this past season, impacting every single game on the ground and as a pass-catcher.

Now he showed he has the type of breakaway speed that could make him a potential star at the next level.

The question now becomes, how high will he go in April?

Running backs went through a 10-15-year stretch in which the position was significantly devalued in the draft, with teams hesitant to use first-round picks on them because they felt they could plug in someone from a later round. While that is still true for the position on a macro level, on a micro level, it still helps to have an elite game-changing talent. Teams have started to become more willing to use high picks on the position again. We have seen Bijan Robinson (Atlanta Falcons) and Ashton Jeanty (Las Vegas Raiders) go in the top-10 in recent classes.

With his performance this week — and on the field this past season — Love might soon join them in that group. It only takes one team to make that call.
