NASCAR's road course master was finally dethroned on Sunday — for now, at least.
Shane van Gisbergen came into Sunday's Cup Series race at Circuit of the Americas with the chance to match Jeff Gordon's record of six road course wins in a row, the most in NASCAR history.
But despite riding Tyler Reddick's coattails for the majority of the race's final run, SVG was unable to find a way around Reddick, who made history of his own by becoming the first driver to ever start a Cup Series season off with three straight wins.
"It's weird to be disappointed with second," van Gisbergen told Fox Sports. "This series is just at a high level. I felt okay, we got our Safety Culture Chevy a lot better than yesterday. But just following Tyler, his driving was immaculate and his car was very good too."
At the very least, Sunday was an excellent points day for van Gisbergen, who entered Sunday squarely on the Chase bubble for the Cup Series field.
Van Gisbergen's next opportunity to compete for a road course win won't come until Watkins Glen on May 10, but he'll have the opportunity to show off how much he's improved on ovals again at Phoenix Raceway on March 8.
