Mikal Bridges' unexpected offensive eruption helps Knicks snap Spurs' 11-game win streak

New York Knicks guard Mikal Bridges may regain touches after dominating in Sunday's home game against the San Antonio Spurs.

Entering Sunday's home game against the Spurs, Bridges had assumed a lesser role. In 12 games in February, the guard averaged 11.8 shots per game after averaging 13.2 in January and 13.1 in December. Knicks head coach Mike Brown also wanted to give guard Landry Shamet, who shot a stellar 42.9 percent from three through 35 games this season, more opportunities.

To his credit, Bridges didn't take it personally.

"I think it's for everybody — me as well," he said after a 109-94 road loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers this past Tuesday (via Stefan Bondy of the New York Post). "You've just got to sacrifice, find your moments and play the right way."

The guard found that moment in Sunday's game against the Spurs (43-17), who had won 11 straight games.

Mikal Bridges erupted against the Spurs

In a 114-89 win over the Spurs, Bridges scored 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, drilled 5-of-9 three-pointers, grabbed five rebounds and logged five steals. He joins guard Jalen Brunson, former guard Stephon Marbury and former forward Latrell Sprewell as the only Knicks in franchise history to register 25-plus points, five-plus rebounds, five-plus steals and five-plus three-pointers in a regular-season game.

On X, ESPN's Vincent Goodwill wrote that it was "Probably the best game I've seen Bridges play all season long."

It's hard to argue with that one. Bridges hasn't met expectations in his second season with the Knicks, who sent four unprotected first-round picks and forward Bojan Bogdanovic to the Brooklyn Nets for the guard before the 2024-25 season.

Through his first 60 games this season, the former Villanova Wildcats star had averaged 15.6 points per game after averaging 17.6 last season. He's still not playing at the same level as he did in Brooklyn, where he averaged 21.2 PPG in two seasons. That has many questioning whether he's giving the Knicks a return on their investment.

If Bridges builds off his performance against the Spurs on Sunday, he will begin to show why the Knicks traded a haul for him. He would also make New York (39-22) an even more dangerous team heading into the playoffs.

The Knicks are third in the Eastern Conference, meaning they're already in a great position. With 21 regular-season games remaining, though, they want to keep picking up momentum. To do that, they should once again increase Bridges' role to see if he can catch fire down the stretch.
