It was difficult to find any experts who had the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl before the 2025 season.
They made it there all the same, with a major spark on offense coming from veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Diggs came to New England as a gamble. 31 years old at the time, he was coming off a major knee injury and was given a three-year, $63.5 million contract.
It worked out on the field, and Diggs would lead the team in receptions, targets and yards. Despite that, his future with the team is in doubt.
New England executive VP of player personnel Eliot Wolf wasn't quick to talk specifics ahead of the NFL Combine. However, he did admit that conversations need to happen around the star receiver.
“Yes, Stefon had a tremendous season,” Wolf said, via The Athletic. “The leadership that he showed was great. And these are conversations that we’ll continue to have and weigh everything and talk about different things as we move forward.”
Diggs did run into off-field issues late in the season. That includes an accusation of assault and battery after a pay dispute with his personal chef. He would later plead not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to be in court again on April 1.
In 2026, Diggs carries a cap hit of $26.5 million. If he's still on the team on March 13, then he'll be guaranteed another $6 million.
The shock has quickly worn off from making the Super Bowl in New England. Now, Patriots fans have high expectations and want to win their seventh title, and first without Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.
Wolf and the team know this. That means building around third-year quarterback Drake Maye and having a team that can withstand being the front-runner rather than the underdog.
“Having made the Super Bowl in Year 1 of Coach Vrabel’s program is really cool, obviously,” Wolf added. “But we’re all aware that we have more work to do on the roster. And so I don’t think that the fact that we made the Super Bowl does anything other than possibly make us a more attractive destination for free agents. We were attractive before because of Drake (Maye) and because of Coach Vrabel. Now that we’ve established a winning culture that we hope we can maintain, it makes us even more attractive.”
There is the possibility that Wolf believes he can upgrade the wide receiver position and use the money saved, as well as the resources gained, in a Diggs trade to make up for his production. The Patriots have also been deeply involved in A.J. Brown rumors. It's possible that the front office doesn't want to pay for two star receivers. That's just reading tea leaves, though.
Brown is the most ready option to become WR1 in New England. The problem is that the Philadelphia Eagles are already being cited as asking a very high price. So, even if the two salaries weren't an issue, replacing lost draft picks could be important, too.
Realistically, the team doesn't have any other receivers ready to step into that top role. In particular, having a star receiver opposite them to draw coverage. The Dallas Cowboys just used their franchise tag on George Pickens, too. So, finding a star receiver in the prime of their career isn't an easy task this season.
