Social media sensation Garrett Mitchell, who goes by the stage name Cleetus McFarland, will make his NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series debut at Rockingham Speedway on April 4, driving the No. 33 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing.
But there's a twist to RCR's Wednesday announcement: McFarland has only five laps of NASCAR Truck Series competition, having crashed out of his series debut at Daytona on Feb. 13 early. He's competed in just five ARCA Menards Series races and tallied an average finish of 15.4.
McFarland has obviously been approved for NOAPS competition, and there's no reason to suggest he will take any action on the track that blatantly puts himself or others in harms way. It's also clear that McFarland loves racing and has every intention of doing things right.
But racing at the second highest level of stock car competition in the country with such limited experience in the third and fourth highest levels will be no small feat, especially at a track as difficult at Rockingham.

There is a fair question of whether or not McFarland should be subjected to more experience in ARCA or the Truck Series before hopping into an RCR Chevy that will have plenty of speed in it at Rockingham in a month's time.
McFarland, who has over 4.65 million subscribers, is a huge draw for NASCAR. His popularity is undeniable, and he will inevitably bring more buzz to the race weekend at Rockingham regardless of how he runs.
But if his race at "The Rock" is similar to his short-lived Truck Series debut at Daytona, questions will need to be asked about how quickly he's being moved up the unforgiving NASCAR ladder.
