Why Eloy Jimenez deserves a spot on the Blue Jays' Opening Day roster

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Eloy Jimenez has put on a strong performance in camp, which puts him in a good position to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.

The Blue Jays first signed the 29-year-old to a minor league deal in August 2025, then re-signing him in January, and he's proving that he could make a solid bench piece.

Making the case for Eloy Jimenez earning a roster spot

The Dominican is batting .391 with a home run, nine hits and an OPS of 1.069 this spring. What's stood out the most is the power that he has unleashed. His exit velocity (100+ mph) has been impressive, and it would provide the Blue Jays with more right-handed power.

The dynamite single he hit off Paul Blackburn topped at 104.7 mph, showcasing how he's determined to make a roster spot.

This would also be his chance to rebound after the slump he faced in 2024 and 2025, which was partly due to injuries. Jimenez offers depth to the roster as a designated hitter and outfielder.

In addition, his performance has signaled his return to form. From 2019-2023, Jimenez demonstrated his reliable hitting skills with a 100+ wRC+. He also hit 89 home runs over that span.

Jimenez can return to his consistent form by making adjustments to his approach with the help of hitting coach David Popkins. Popkins did a stellar job of helping Daulton Varsho regain his form, putting him in position to have a breakout season, and also supported Nathan Lukes with making adjustments.

Even during the stretch of his poor performance, Jimenez still illustrated latent bat speed and quality contact with his bat.

But he will have to continue to impress if he wants a roster spot, as the Blue Jays already have several outfielders. He will also be fighting for a bench role with recently acquired Jesus Sanchez, Lukes and Davis Schneider.

When it comes to the outfield, Lukes and Sanchez are stronger defensively. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, Jimenez is a defensive liability in the outfield, who has posted a career -18 OAA. But he would help fill the void of right-handed power on the bench if he avoids landing on the injury list.

Another compelling aspect of Jimenez's game that has shown improvement is his launch angle. He's shown more consistency with driving the ball up, leading to more power, which was not present during his struggles.
