Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational after suffering a back injury during the tournament at Bay Hill in Florida, the PGA Tour has announced. The sudden withdrawal came just before the start of the third round, and the 36-year-old will now be hoping to regain fitness before the Masters at Augusta from April 9–12, where he will be bidding to defend his title.

McIlroy Looking Forward To Returning Next Year

McIlroy had been in top shape so far in the tournament and was widely considered one of the favorites. The five-time major winner held a share of ninth place – nine shots back – after he moved to four under on Friday with a round of 68. He withdrew shortly before his scheduled tee time on Saturday at Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando. The Grand Slam winner had been preparing to start his third round when he began feeling pain in his lower back. The discomfort worsened during his warm-up, forcing him to step away from the event.

The 36-year-old first noticed a slight problem earlier in the day while working out. The pain became stronger and developed into muscle spasms when he later began hitting balls on the driving range before his round. McIlroy said he was disappointed to pull out of the tournament but explained that the pain made it impossible to continue competing safely.

“While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back,” McIlroy said in a statement. “As I started hitting balls on the range before the round, it worsened and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back. Unfortunately, I’m not able to continue and have to withdraw. I was excited to compete this weekend. I wish the Arnold Palmer Invitational a great finish and look forward to being back next year.”

McIlroy Withdrawal Raises Fitness Concerns

This withdrawal marks just the second time the Northern Irishman has withdrawn from a Tour event. His only previous withdrawal came during PGA TOUR competition at the 2013 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. McIlroy will defend his title at The Players Championship next week at TPC Sawgrass, but his injury now raises concerns as the PGA Tour enters one of the busiest parts of the season.

He isn’t expected to miss much time and will focus on recovery in the coming days. The timing is significant with another major tournament just around the corner. Many believe the decision to withdraw was precautionary, allowing McIlroy to avoid risking a more serious setback and give his body time to recover.
