NHL insider drops update on Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving's future

The top brass of the Toronto Maple Leafs have not decided to fire general manager Brad Treliving, nor have they told him that his job is at risk, according to reports.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Treliving likely has not been told anything definitive about his future with the Maple Leafs yet, despite the pressure fans have applied for structural changes following the team's rough patch.

"He wouldn't be told at this point that he's not getting the job back, that he won't be back for another year, because if that's the case, then, you know, if you're Keith Pelley, you just pull the trigger," Dreger said on Monday on the "First Up" podcast.

"There's no point having a guy around that you know you're going to fire. (...) Obviously, coming off the trade deadline, there has to be a full review of hockey operations at the end of the year. Has to be. There's no other way around it. And, you know, that doesn't always end up with the general manager getting gashed, or the coach getting fired."

Darren Dreger shifts blame from Brad Treliving, points finger at Maple Leafs players

Dreger even noted that, although it may be painful for some people to digest, sometimes it's not the manager's fault or the coach's fault, but rather, sometimes it's the player's fault, insinuating that the Maple Leafs players have fallen short in terms of performance this season.

During the NHL trade deadline, the Seattle Kraken acquired winger Bobby McMann from Toronto in exchange for a conditional 2027 second-round pick from the Columbus Blue Jackets and a 2026 fourth-round pick from the Anaheim Ducks.

Also, the Los Angeles Kings acquired center Scott Laughton for a conditional 2026 third-round pick from the Ottawa Senators. And the Colorado Avalanche acquired center Nicolas Roy for a 2027 first-round pick and a 2026 fifth-round pick on March 5.

For some, Treliving's work was mediocre at the trade deadline. But truth be told, that only means the summer will be more than busy for the Leafs. It might also serve as an opportunity to see more of prospects like Easton Cowan with regular minutes in what remains of the regular season.
