The PGA Tour heads to TPC Sawgrass this week for the Players Championship, the "fifth major" on the professional golf schedule. With Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler both dealing with issues heading into the tournament, there's no shortage of storylines for the PGA Tour's premier event.
Let's break them down.
McIlroy is the second favorite to win his second consecutive Players Championship after his triumph last year, but he might not be able to tee it up this week. The World No. 2 withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week after tweaking his back during a workout. According to Golf Channel, he will continue receiving treatment at home with hopes of traveling to TPC Sawgrass on Wednesday.
If McIlroy is good to go for The Players, he should be on the short list of contenders. The Northern Irishman leads the PGA Tour this season in total strokes gained and ranks sixth in strokes gained on approach, the most important skill to succeed at TPC Sawgrass.
It's rare to see Scheffler struggle with his irons, but he's been unexplainably mediocre with his approach play in 2026. The World No. 1 ranks 88th on Tour this season in strokes gained on approach and 120th in proximity to the hole.
Scottie Scheffler ranks at TPC Sawgrass the last 3 years:

Score to par - 1st
Greens in regulation - 1st
Bogey avoidance - 1st
Par 3 scoring - 1st
Strokes gained ball striking - 1st
At the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scheffler lost more than two strokes on approach for the first time since the 2024 BMW Championship and finished a measly T24. The two-time Players champion is a perfect fit for TPC Sawgrass when he's playing his best golf, but that's not the case right now.
Young and Aberg are two talented youngsters looking for signature wins to take the next step in their careers. This could be the week, as both players are coming off strong weeks at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Young finished T3 and led the field in strokes gained from off the tee by a wide margin. TPC Sawgrass rewards players who can be aggressive and accurate with their driver, and Young is striping his right now. As for Aberg, he also finished T3 and led the field in strokes gained from tee to green. Don't be surprised if Young or Aberg snag that signature win at TPC Sawgrass.
Remember when Fowler went nuclear down the stretch to win his first and only Players Championship? Surprisingly, that was 11 years ago. The fan-favorite golfer has been through a ton of ups and downs since then, but his arrow is pointing back up in 2026.
Fowler has six top-20 finishes and three top-10s in his last seven starts. He ranks 15th on the PGA Tour this year in strokes gained from putting and 21st in driving accuracy, which can be a winning combination at TPC Sawgrass.
