The Dallas Cowboys have a kicker decision to make now that the new league year is officially underway. Brandon Aubrey remains a restricted free agent after the team placed a second-round tender on him worth $5.76 million back on March 7.
Aubrey has been vocal about his desire to remain with the Cowboys long-term rather than just playing out the tender.
He addressed his contract situation Wednesday during an appearance at the Arlington Grand Prix, offering some insight into where things stand between him and the front office.
Speaking with FOX 4 News reporter Jeff Kolb, Aubrey explained that contract discussions have not progressed much yet. The Cowboys are focusing on their unrestricted free agents first, both internally and from outside the organization, which has left Aubrey's situation in a "waiting pattern" for now.
"Obviously, Dallas is my home. I'd like to keep it that way, so it would be nice to get a long-term deal going. Just need to sit down and have that conversation.
"[There’s] Waiting pattern. There's a lot of moving parts with the Cowboys at the moment. There's players that aren't restricted that they've got to sort through first, because with that restriction, movement is significantly more difficult."
Brandon Aubrey tells me there’s been no movement in contract negotiations with the Cowboys this week.

The timing could work in Aubrey's favor. The Houston Texans agreed to a two-year, $13 million extension with kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn on Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo. That contract shifts the financial landscape for kickers across the league.
Fairbairn will earn $6.5 million annually under the new deal, surpassing the previous high mark set by Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker at $6.4 million per year.
The extension establishes a new ceiling for the position and gives Aubrey a reference point when his negotiations eventually begin.
Dallas now has a clearer picture of what it might take to secure Aubrey beyond this season. If the Cowboys want to avoid losing their standout kicker, they'll need to match or exceed the market Fairbairn just reset.
