Ideal prospects for Las Vegas Raiders to pick in support of Fernando Mendoza

The Las Vegas Raiders are ushering in a new era with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and are poised to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza.

The 2025 Heisman Trophy winner and national championship leader brings prototypical size (6-foot-5, 236 pounds), very good ball placement, poise under pressure, and solid pocket mobility to a franchise desperate for a cornerstone signal-caller.

He's compared to a more athletic Matt Ryan, Mendoza's elite production — over 3,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns — positions him as the clear QB1 in a class lacking depth at the position. With new head coach Klint Kubiak's offensive scheme, Mendoza could thrive alongside existing talents like tight end Brock Bowers and running back Ashton Jeanty.

However, the Raiders' rebuild extends beyond the quarterback position. They'll need to bolster the offensive line to protect Mendoza, add receiver depth, and rebuild a defense that ranked near the bottom in sacks and points allowed last season. Free agency moves, like signing center Tyler Linderbaum to a three-year, $81 million deal, provide stability up front, but the draft remains key for long-term success.

If they choose not to trade back into the first round, here are five ideal prospects for the Raiders to consider at pick 36.

Five Candidates for Pick 36

Omar Cooper Jr., WR,  Indiana

Mendoza's college teammate is a speedy, explosive slot/possession receiver. He would bring the necessary chemistry and a reliable target, alongside Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty, to build rapport quickly.

Max Iheanachor, OL,  Arizona State

He's a versatile offensive lineman who can play tackle or guard. He would offer immediate help protecting Mendoza, especially if the Raiders prioritize O-line youth after free agency moves like Tyler Linderbaum.

Lee Hunter, DL,  Texas Tech

Hunter's space-eating ability, run-stopping power, and pass-rush upside make him a perfect anchor to rebuild the defensive interior alongside recent additions. He has the potential to develop into a long-term defender to wreak havoc within the interior.

Gennings Dunker, OL,  Iowa

Dunker is an experienced, reliable, athletic tackle or guard with strong pass-blocking traits to bolster Mendoza's protection alongside recent signings like Linderbaum and to provide immediate depth. Overall, he would fit in Kubiak's system.

Christen Miller, DL,  Georgia

Miller would be another schematic, 3-4 fit for new defensive coordinator Rob Leonard. He displays the ability to stack-and-shed against single blocks with solid post-snap awareness to win across the face.

Colton Edwards

Colton Edwards graduated from the United States Sports University in 2023. He brings three years and counting of college football personnel experience (Tennessee Tech 2024-2025 and currently at Western Michigan).
