The Philadelphia Phillies are gearing up for the upcoming MLB season with hopes that their current 40‑man roster is strong enough to deliver a third straight National League East title.

The outfield alignment looks a bit different this year, but the lineup will still be led by its usual superstars in first baseman Bryce Harper and designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. Both players are currently away from camp while competing in the World Baseball Classic, though their early results have been very different.

Schwarber has opened the international tournament on fire, posting a .375 batting average, .500 on‑base percentage and 1.063 OPS across his first four games. Harper, meanwhile, has struggled, hitting just .200 with a .294 on‑base percentage and .494 OPS in 15 at‑bats.

This is a pivotal year for Harper, who enters the season with something to prove after Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski publicly questioned whether he can still perform at an elite level. But there is one troubling development that has followed Harper since he signed his 13‑year, $330 million contract with Philadelphia in 2019.

Harper has increasingly struggled against high‑velocity fastballs, a trend that has become more noticeable to Phillies fans watching him at the WBC. His batting average against four‑seam fastballs has continued to decline, a common challenge for hitters entering their mid‑30s as bat speed naturally drops, and Harper is no exception.

Beyond the batting average, Harper’s success against four‑seamers has dipped. According to Statcast’s Baseball Savant, he whiffed 31.8% of the time against fastballs in 2025 and struck out 26.2% of the time, both higher than his overall rates. He also hit just three home runs off four‑seamers, a sign that he is not consistently barreling the pitch.

While Harper remains an incredible player with a Hall of Fame‑caliber resume, including Rookie of the Year, two MVPs, eight All‑Star selections and four Silver Sluggers, he will need to make adjustments to return to the level he once played at, especially as he continues chasing his first World Series title.

For now, Harper will stay focused on contributing to Team USA at the WBC, hoping a strong finish there can help spark a turnaround heading into the regular season.
