Team USA stumble could cost Mark DeRosa MLB opportunities

Mark DeRosa thought that Team USA had already clinched a berth in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals. That mistake could be costly in more ways than one. 

In an interview on MLB Network, DeRosa said that while he wanted to win the game against Italy, the USA squad had already advanced to the next round. As such, he was looking to use that game to give some of his starters a rest. The Americans proceeded to find themselves in an 8-0 hole. While Team USA attempted to mount a comeback, they fell short, losing 8-6.

That loss left Team USA in need of help to advance to the quarterfinals. Team USA eventually got that help, advancing thanks to a complicated tiebreaker.

World Baseball Classic tiebreaker misunderstanding could have impact on Mark DeRosa

The potential impact for DeRosa could go beyond Team USA's fortunes. Although DeRosa had transitioned from the diamond to a television analyst role, his baseball acumen was well-regarded around the league. He had been considered for the Marlins (2015) and Mets (2017) managerial roles but was passed over before being named the manager for Team USA ahead of the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

There is plenty of blame to go around. An error by pitcher Brad Keller led to three unearned runs in the sixth, which would prove to be the difference. Infielder Gunnar Henderson and outfielder Aaron Judge struck out with shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. on first, ending Team USA's chance at a comeback. The opportunities were there.

However, it all comes back to DeRosa. Whether it is right or not, his lack of awareness as to the standings and tiebreakers meant that Team USA needed to rely on others to advance. While this is an important lesson for DeRosa to learn as a manager, the lack of awareness could impact whether or not he is considered for future MLB openings.
