After taking a big step down in 2025 following their magical 2024 season, the Washington Commanders have added even more depth to their ground attack for 2026.
On Thursday, Washington agreed to what's being reported as a one-year deal with running back Rachaad White, who will leave the Buccaneers after an up and down four seasons in Tampa Bay.
The move reunites White with his old college roommate from Arizona State, Jayden Daniels, who is also looking to rebound and get back to his old form.
White on the Commanders becomes an opportunity for both sides to revitalize their paths and join forces in a marriage of convenience. The 27-year-old White is still in his prime and could now see an increased role with the Commanders compared to what he received in Tampa Bay.

White ran for 572 yards during the 2025 regular season, but did so while averaging 4.3 yards per touch. As has been the case throughout his career, he also showed his versatility by catching 40 passes for 218 yards.
But his production did dip from where it was in 2024 and significantly from the best season yet in his career in 2023. White ran for 613 yards and added 393 more as a receiver in one fewer game two seasons ago.
However, his 2023 seasons shows his true potential. White came close to reaching 1,000 yards on the ground with 990 and did it with 549 yards through the air to far exceed the milestone overall.
He has 2,656 rushing yards and 1,450 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns in 67 games played so far in his career.
It's possible Daniels will help fight for his friend to be used even more, helping to take his game to another level. And for an offense that is balanced when at its best, White's versatility could both assist what they gain on the ground and open up options in the passing game, most notably gaining extra yardage off short routes and when the protection breaks down around Daniels.
A familiar weapon could boost a healthy Daniels as he deals with pressure to lead the Commanders on another deep playoff run — Washington followed making it all the way to the NFC Championship Game in 2024 by going 5-12 last season.
The NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year two years ago, Daniels only appeared in seven games in his sophomore season. He struggled when on the field as well, going 2-5 with an 88.1 quarterback rating, a drop from the 100.1 he registered as a rookie. His passing yards per game went from 209.9 to 180.3, and his rushing yards per carry went from 6.0 to 4.8.
Of course, White is hungry to get back to the playoffs himself after the Buccaneers disappointed as a team and also missed out on a return trip in 2025.
