The Milwaukee Bucks edged further toward the NBA draft lottery after falling 129–114 to the Phoenix Suns on March 10 at Fiserv Forum. Kyle Kuzma paced the team with 33 points and reached a significant career milestone by passing 10,000 points.
Kuzma put up 31 points through three quarters to keep the Bucks in the game, but they allowed Royce O’Neale to hit a 49-foot buzzer beater at the end of the third, breaking a 97-97 tie and giving Phoenix a surge of momentum heading into the fourth.
The Bucks forward said he had been aware he was nearing the milestone over the past several games, entering the matchup against Phoenix with 9,969 career points. He reached the 10,000-point mark on his final shot of a 16-point third quarter.
“I was praying this morning, I told God, you know it’d be pretty cool if you know, I could score like 30 tonight because I knew where I kind of was,” commented Kuzma during his postgame availability. “And I had 33. You can’t make it up, honestly.”
Kuzma became the 414th player in NBA history to reach 10,000 career points. Kuzma is among the top scorers from the 2017 draft class, with only Donovan Mitchell of Cleveland, Jayson Tatum of Boston, De’Aaron Fox of Sacramento, and Bam Adebayo of Miami ahead of him.
The 30-year old stayed in the Bucks starting lineup Tuesday and reinforced his place by leading Milwaukee in scoring. He hit six three-pointers for the first time this season through 59 games and made an impact on defense after going four straight games without a steal or block. Over his last six games, Kuzma is averaging 18.5 points.
